A pervert who travelled over five hours across the length of the country to meet who he thought was an underage girl was snared by paedophile hunters.

Martyn Ager, 32, was caught by Dark Justice after contacting one of their fake profiles on an online chatroom.

Ager, of Sandon Close, Colchester, travelled around 300 miles to Newcastle on August 22 this year, after only one night of contact with the underage girl.

A judge today spared Ager jail after he pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to meet a child following grooming at an earlier hearing.

A video taken by Dark Justice, who turned up at the meeting in the place of the fake teen, shows Ager sitting on the floor in tears after realising he has been
snared.

Prosecutor Michael Bunch told the Newcastle Crown Court: "The defendant talked about making payment to the girl for kisses and cuddles.

"The conversation between the two progressed quickly. He suggested that he drive to the north east, though it was not until the following morning that he arrived at the meeting point."

The court heard that the police arrived at the scene within minutes and recovered items over night essentials, Playstation games and two bottles of wine.

At one point he told his victim: "If you don't tell me what you want, I won't bring anything at all."

Mr Bunch told how the inclusion of alcohol in his bag could be considered as a gift or a bribe, an aggravating factor.

Vic Laffey, defending said: "This is a man with low self esteem who has never been in trouble with police over the course of his life and has made a terrible error.

"He has lost his job and his friends. His friends have distanced themselves from him after hearing about his crime.

"He still has the support of his family. His step father has driven him the long distance here today."

Judge Caroline Wigin said: "The circumstances of your offending, Mr Ager, are that you got in touch with a girl that you believed to be 13.

"You proposed offering her money for kisses and cuddles and you proposed that you would put your hands between her legs."

She added: "Although your plea was early, it was not at the earliest opportunity."

She jailed him for 12 months, suspended for 24 months, with a rehabilitation requirement of 30 days and 100 hours of community service.

He was also given a months curfew between 7am and 7pm, made to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years and ordered to pay a £140 victim surcharge.
