Pair jailed for vicious street attack

JAILED ... Mark Guy, left, and Robert Atkinson were jailed for a vicious street attack.

JAILED ... Mark Guy, left, and Robert Atkinson were jailed for a vicious street attack.

TWO thugs have been jailed for a vicious street attack in South Tyneside which left a man badly injured.

Mark Guy, 29, of Trinity Walk, and Robert Atkinson, 19, of Alice Street, both South Shields, pleaded guilty to wounding a 45-year-old man in Laygate on September 7 last year.

Guy also admitted an offence of criminal damage with intent to endanger life which happened three days later.

At Newcastle Crown Court today, Guy was sentenced to six years in prison and Atkinson to two years.

Detective Inspector Paul Woods said: “These men carried out a vicious attack on a total stranger which left their victim seriously injured in hospital.

“Just days after the assault, Guy cut through a gas pipe, putting dozens of homes at risk and causing concern and distress to the occupants.

“Atkinson and Guy are now starting significant sentences, and I hope the people whose lives have been affected by their behaviour will take comfort from the fact that justice has been done today.”
