A MAN has been arrested after cash was allegedly stolen from the South Tyneside pub he worked at.
Police launched an investigation after reports that thousands of pounds had gone missing from the Ship and Royal in Ocean Road in mid-September.
Ronald McKeith, former manager of the pub, was arrested on suspicion of stealing the money and has since left his position at the town-centre watering hole.
The 42-year-old has been bailed by detectives while they investigate the alleged theft further.
Scott Weir, operations director with County Durham-based Wear Inns, which manages the pub, said: “We are co-operating fully with the police investigation but have no further comment other than to say the Ship and Royal is open as normal under a new manager who has recently been appointed.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft.
“This is in connection with a report of theft of money from the Ship and Royal pub, on Ocean Road, South Shields, believed to have happened on Saturday, September 14.
“The man arrested has been bailed while enquiries continue.”
Anyone with any information about the alleged theft is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
