Police hunt for 999 fire hoaxer

FIRE chiefs have slammed a hoax caller for putting lives at risk.

A male youth said a fire had broken out at an unnamed restaurant in Frederick Street, Laygate, South Shields, at 9.30pm yesterday.

But when officers from the town’s fire station went looking for the premises, there was no blaze to be found.

A spokesman at the John Reid Road station said: “We had our doubts when the call first came in, but, as with all calls, we go and check them out, just in case.

“When we arrived, sure enough, everything was in order and there was no fire.

“Hoax calls like this are a waste of valuable resources and could cost lives.”
