Police inspector is back on his old beat

HES BACK ... Inspector John Smith.

HES BACK ... Inspector John Smith.

A POLICE officer is returning to the place where he started his career to take on the role of neighbourhood inspector.

John Smith will take the helm of the Riverside and West Shields policing teams when current inspector Peter Sutton retires from the force.

Insp Smith, who started his career as a Pc on patrol in Whiteleas when he joined the force in 1989, said: “I’m excited to have the opportunity to return to where it all started and to continue to develop the excellent links with the community and partnerships already in place.

“Neighbourhood Policing is all about spending time in the community, finding out what concerns residents have and dealing with these in an appropriate way in conjunction with partner agencies.

“I hope to continue to build on the trust and confidence the Neighbourhood Policing Team has in the communities they serve as it’s this which encourages residents to come forward with concerns they have.”

Insp Smith was born in Jarrow and his family live in South Tyneside.

He added: “Some excellent work has been carried out by the teams – this will continue to ensure residents’ quality of life remains one of our main priorities.

“I will make sure our links with all communities and groups in the areas as well as our partnership agencies are stronger than ever.”
