Police seek witness to Metro station assault

POLICE are appealing for help to trace a witness to an assault in South Tyneside.

The attack happened at about 4.45pm on Saturday, December 28, at Hebburn Metro station, near the steps from the car park up to Prince Consort Road.

A 19-year-old was assaulted by a groups of youths, suffering bruising and swelling to his face and a sprained wrist.

Police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch, particularly a man who came to the victim’s aid and intervened in the attack.

It’s believed he may have important information which may help with the investigation.

Adam Paul Smith, 19, of Ormonde Street, Jarrow, has been charged with racially aggravated assault.

He will next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on January 14.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with assault.
