POLICE are warning shoppers to keep their property safe after a handbag theft in South Tyneside.

The snatch happened at about 2pm on Friday when a woman shopping at Morrisons in Viking Park, Jarrow, had her handbag taken from her trolley while her back was turned.

Chief Insp Brian Walker, of South Tyneside Area Command, said: “It’s a timely reminder for shoppers, both in town centres and supermarkets, to ensure property, including handbags, wallets and purses, is close to them at all times.

“Valuables should be kept in zipped compartments and it’s vital nothing is left unattended in trolleys or out of sight.

“Opportunist thieves do operate, and by taking crime prevention steps, people can reduce their risk of falling victim to such a crime.

“Inquiries are ongoing into this theft, and we continue to do everything possible to trace those people suspected of being involved in such crimes and ensure action is taken against them.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 ext 69191, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
