A THIEF stole razor blades from a South Tyneside shop three times in two days.

Billy Carter was spotted leaving Boots in Jarrow’s Viking Centre with two packets of Gillette Fusion razors, worth £50, on October 29.

Staff checked CCTV and saw the 28-year-old had been in the shop earlier the same day, and did the same thing.

Carter pleaded guilty to two counts of theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, and asked the bench to take the first theft into consideration when sentencing him.

The court also heard that the day before his latest theft he was given a six-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months at Gateshead Magistrates’ Court for another theft.

Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “Staff were told that a man walked out of the shop holding the bottom of his jacket.

“They watched CCTV and found it was the second time he had been in that day and picked up a box of razors, hid them and left. He went back the next day and tried to do the same thing.”

Heather Bolton, defending, said: “He has been misusing drugs but is now using methadone properly.”

Magistrates gave Carter a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £150 compensation to Boots.

He was given a three-year prison sentence in March last year and was released on licence in September.

“He had a problem with drugs when he went into jail and that continues.

“When he was leaving Durham Prison he was supposed to have a methadone prescription in place and he didn’t.

“He has been misusing drugs but is now using methadone properly.”

Magistrates gave Carter a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £150 compensation to Boots.
