A SHOPLIFTER has been told to stay indoors every day for six weeks after stealing from a South Tyneside shop.
Mark Ridley was spotted stealing a £37 Chanel gift box from Debenhams in Waterloo Place, South Shields, on Saturday.
Staff called police, who followed him to South Shields Metro station, where they found the item in a bin.
Ridley had stashed the moisturiser there when he saw officers approaching.
The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Sarah Guest, prosecuting, said: “When he was arrested, he said he was given it by a friend, who he would not name, and hadn’t stolen it himself.
“He was charged with the theft and has now pleaded guilty.”
John Williams, defending, said: “He was released from prison five weeks ago and had trouble getting his benefits.
“He stole this item to try and sell on because he needed money. He now has his benefits sorted out.”
Ridley, of New Bridge Street, Newcastle, was given a six-week electronically-tagged curfew between 11am and 7pm.
He was also ordered to pay a £60 victim surcharge.
n Stacey Mattinson, of Anson Street, Gateshead, also appeared at South Magistrates’ Court charged with the theft.
She pleaded not guilty and will stand trial at the court on November 12.
The 25-year-old was granted bail until then on the conditions that she lives at the address given to court, keeps out of South Shields and reports to Gateshead police station on the day before her trial.
