A THIEF has been given a community order for stealing three sets of headphones from a South Tyneside shop.
Keith Dowley was caught on closed-circuit TV making off with the haul from Argos in South Shields town centre on Friday, June 28.
The 39-year-old was recognised from that footage by police investigating the theft.
He pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
The court heard that Dowley, of Haggerston Terrace, Jarrow, stole two pairs of Philips headphones and one Skull Candy pair from the Russell Street store.
Sarah Guest, prosecuting, said: “CCTV from the store was shown to officers, who recognised Dowley from previous dealings with him.
Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He has struggled with alcohol for many years and is now in need of help.
“He has a speech problem which leads him to drink to excess to help his confidence.”
District Judge John Foster gave Dowley a six-month supervision order with an alcohol treatment requirement.
He was also ordered to pay £35 compensation to Argos and a £60 victim surcharge.
