POLICE have appealed for help to solve two early-morning arson attacks in South Shields which they say may be connected.
The first happened on Friday, July 12, between 3.30am and 3.47am in Wharton Street, Westoe.
A white Ford Transit was destroyed by fire, and a blue Vauxhall Astra was damaged with a corrosive substance and also had its rear tyres slashed.
Then on Saturday, September 7, between 2.15am and 2.30am, a Vauxhall Astra was damaged by fire while it was parked in Dunelm Street - a small road leading off Wharton Street.
Police have been carrying out door to door inquiries in the area and are appealing for any witnesses.
Officers believe these incidents are linked and are asking for help from the public to catch the culprits.
Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said: “We want to speak to anyone who was in these areas at the relevant times and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious.
“These incidents have caused considerable damage and upset to the owners of these vehicles.
“These types of incidents are unusual and we would ask for anyone with information to come forward.”
