A MAN from South Tyneside has admitted to having more than 132,000 indecent images of children on his computer.

Some of the images downloaded by Paul Carrick, 45, were in the most serious category, Durham Crown Court heard.

Carrick, of Cleadon Road, South Shields, admitted 17 charges of making or possessing indecent images.

He pleaded not guilty to six charges of distributing images.

Sean Dryden, prosecuting, said: “Those pleas are acceptable.

“Some of the images were in a file-sharing programme, but there is no direct evidence they had been shared.”

Anne Richardson, defending, said Carrick suffers from autism.

She added: “The court would be assisted by a psychiatric report, in addition to the usual pre-sentence report.”

The Recorder, Mrs Amanda Rippon, ordered the reports.

She told Carrick: “Given the number of serious images, the most likely sentence is one of prison.

“You may have bail, but you should not take that as any promise that the the outcome will be anything other than custody.”

Carrick was bailed to return to court to be dealt with on October 4.
