A WOMAN has appeared in court charged with racial harassment.

Katie Leigh Smith was seen at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, in South Shields, yesterday, to face the charge.

The 33-year-old, of Millais Gardens, South Shields, allegedly used threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour, within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress.

It is also said that the offence was racially aggravated and was committed in South Shields on May 19.

Smith, addressing the court, said she couldn’t remember the alleged offence and didn’t know anything about it.

She added: “I’m not racist. I’ve got a half-caste son and I’m going to marry a black man.”

Smith, represented by David Foster of Geoffrey Forrester & Co, pleaded not guilty and the case was adjourned for trial on Wednesday, October 29.
