DERBY DAY ... two South Tynesiders were among the 20 arrests.

TWO South Tyneside men were arrested in connection with derby day disorder.

There were 20 arrests made by officers policing the match between Sunderland and Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Seven people from across the region were arrested in a pre-planned police operation in the early hours of Sunday before the game - which the Black Cats went on to win 2-1.

During the match there were 13 more people arrested for various offences.

They included 31-year-old Jamie Tenet of Elm Street, Jarrow, who will appear at Sunderland magistrates’ Court on November 20 charged with being drunk and disorderly, and a 23-year-old borough man who has been summonsed to the same court on the same charge.

Police praised the majority of fans for their good behaviour at the grudge match.
