A METRO was held up in South Tyneside after a suspected shoplifter got on board.
Police made a request to halt the train, which was at Simonside station in South Shields, at noon today.
Officers then arrested a man who had been involved in an alleged incident of shoplifting in South Shields town centre.
The train was held up for 18 minutes before normal service was resumed.
A Metro spokesman said: “A train was held by the police who were after an alleged shoplifter who was on board one of the carriages. The train was held for 18 minutes before resuming its journey.”
