a 72-YEAR-old man was taken to hospital suffering from a suspected broken leg and head injury after being knocked over by a car in South Tyneside.
Police and the ambulance crews were called to Marsden Road, South Shields, after the accident at about 3.20pm yesterday.
The man had been hit by a Citroen Saxo car.
The 18-year-old driver was arrested at the scene by police.
A police spokesman confirmed that the pedestrian had suffered head injury and a possible broken leg.
He was taken to South Tyneside Hospital.
