A THIEF was caught on camera snatching a bottle of booze from a South Tyneside store.
John Snellgrove was spotted by a store assistant taking a bottle of £4.99 rosé wine from B & M Bargains, in North Street, in South Shields, on Tuesday.
When staff viewed CCTV, the 43-year-old was identified and he was arrested later on the same day.
Snellgrove, of Laygate, South Shields, pleaded guilty to shop theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Keith Laidlaw, prosecuting, said: “A shop assistant was in the alcohol aisle at about 12.35pm when she saw the defendant acting suspiciously.
She saw him selecting a bottle of Echo Falls wine and either putting it up his sleeve or hiding it between his arm and body.
“CCTV captured the incident and he was arrested later on in the afternoon.”
Laura Johnson, defending, said: “He has entered an immediate guilty plea.
“He was in the store with his partner and wanted alcohol but had no money so he took the item without paying.”
Magistrates handed Snellgrove a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £4.99 compensation to the store, as the wine was not recovered.
