A THIEF was spotted walking out of a South Tyneside shop with five pairs of jeans – just minutes after raiding it for six other items of clothing.
Lee Devlin was seen on CCTV in Peacocks in the Viking Centre, Jarrow, walking out of the shop with the jeans under his arm.
Staff called the police and checked the footage, which showed he had been in five minutes earlier and walked out with six women’s tops, unnoticed.
Officers caught up with the 38-year-old near the town’s Metro station, where he had the goods, worth £170, on him.
Devlin, of Broughton Road, South Shields, pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He walked into the shop, took the items and walked out again – bold as brass.
“Then he went back and did it again five minutes later. He is a distinctive man and was clearly going to be seen on CCTV doing it. It appears he had been drinking as well.”
Devlin was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
