A THIEF stole a mobile phone from a South Tyneside shop.
Robert Ball took the iPhone from Grainger Games in King Street, South Shields, on August 15.
The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to theft at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Glenda Beck, prosecuting, said: “He prised open the sliding doors of the phone display and took the phone, worth £300.
“He then went to the counter and asked where he could find the iPhones that were for sale and the staff member pointed him to the display.
“He walked out of the shop and a customer said they thought he had stolen a phone.
“Police identified him from CCTV.”
Magistrates gave Ball, of Roseberry Street, Stanley, a 12-month community order with supervision.
He was also ordered to pay £150 compensation.
