POLICE are warning metal thieves they are risking their lives by attempting to steal cable from a derelict site in South Tyneside.
The former Reyrolle site, in Victoria Road West, was targeted by thieves last week who attempted to make off with cable buried in the ground.
Damage was caused during the incident, and there could have been far more tragic consequences, with offenders cutting through a live cable used to carry power to electricity stations in the area.
Hebburn Neighbourhood Inspector Ian King said: “We are carrying out enquiries to trace those responsible for this incident.
“Whoever is responsible needs to be aware they are risking their lives. Cutting any electric cable is incredibly dangerous and could lead to serious, if not fatal injuries. It’s just not worth it.”
