Third man arrested over street attack

CORDONED OFF ... the scene of the assault in South Eldon Street, South Shields, which left a man fighting for his life.

A THIRD man has been arrested over a South Tyneside street attack which left a man fighting for his life.

The 35-year-old victim is in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

He suffered a fractured skull after being set upon by a gang in South Eldon Street, South Shields, at anout 9.25pm on Friday.

Two men aged 23 and 26 were arrested yesterday on suspicion of robbery, and today a third man, also aged 23, was arrested.

All three are helping police with their enquiries.

Detective Inspector Andy Fairlamb, of South Tyneside Area Command, is still looking for witnesses to come forward.

He said: “We would like to hear from anyone who might have seen the assault or any other suspicious activity in the South Eldon Street area at about 9.20pm on Friday.”
