POLICE are mounting plain-clothes patrols in a crackdown on shoplifters in South Tyneside.
Officers in South Shields town centre and retail areas across the borough will be watching the movements of individuals thought to be involved in shop theft.
The action is part of the ongoing Operation Soundwave campaign, aimed at tackling opportunist thieves and burglars.
There will also be extra patrols in retail areas and at Metro stations to deter criminals and those who travel into the area to steal, and shop staff are getting training to better identify potential shop thieves.
South Tyneside Council is working closely with officers and retailers to monitor CCTV in the area, meaning if thieves aren’t caught at the scene, they can be identified later. South Tyneside Chief Inspector Brian Walker said: “Two thirds of all offences are detected, and for those that aren’t instantly dealt with we will release CCTV images.”
