BOMB ALERT ... Newcastle University's INTO building was evacuated following the discovery of 'potentially suspicious items'.

A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out by a police bomb squad after the discovery of “potentially suspicious items” at Newcastle University.

Students and staff were evacuated from the building on the Town Moor yesterday afternoon after the items were discovered.

Northumbria Police said the explosion was carried out as a precaution by its explosive ordnance disposal unit.

The alert centred around the INTO building, which offers academic and English language preparation for international students.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested and is helping detectives with their inquiries.

Chief Superintendent Laura Young said: “Police have been searching a Newcastle University building and the building has been evacuated as a precaution so items can be recovered and examined.

“Residents around Newcastle Town Moor may have heard a slight bang, and I would like to reassure them this is in connection with the incident at the university and was planned.”

A University spokesman said: “The INTO building is now open for staff and students following last night’s evacuation and we are working closely with Northumbria Police with their ongoing inquiries.”
