A WOMAN caught stealing 22 items from a South Tyneside supermarket has walked free from court.
Eleanor Taylor, of Julian Avenue, South Shields, was observed by a store security guard taking goods off the shelves at Morrisons in Ocean Road, South Shields, before putting them into a handbag and carrier bag on Wednesday, August 14.
The 56-year-old went to a self-service check out and paid for a pasty, but left the area without paying for the other items – which included alcohol and dog food.
The shop items, which were valued at £34.18, were recovered when Taylor was stopped by the security guard.
Paul Kennedy, defending, said: “She apologised for her behaviour straight away, and was upset when she got to the police station.
“She laid her cards on the table immediately and pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.”
Magistrates imposed an eight-month conditional discharge.
They also ordered Taylor to pay costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.
