A SWIMMING team bagged a boost for its fundraising efforts after checking out a South Shields supermarket.
Members of South Tyneside Swimming Club raised £540 at Tesco’s Newcastle Road store by helping shoppers bag their groceries.
The 30-strong group is on a fundraising drive to help pay for a training camp in Torremolinos, Spain, in April.
Paralympic gold medallist Josef Craig, who trained with the club, was at the event, but will not be accompanying the swimmers to Spain.
The 16-year-old was on hand to sign autographs and pose for photographs with customers.

Earlier this year, he was made an MBE after breaking the world record in the men’s S7 400 metres freestyle event at 2012’s Paralympic Games.
During their stay in Spain, club members, aged nine to 16, will take part in fitness exercises and swimming sessions.
Coach Gary Kirsop said: “The bag-pack was fantastic, and we raised £540. This will go a long way in helping us to keep the costs of the trip down for our members.
“These trips give the swimmers a lot of experience, and the training is really intensive and focused.”
