A tragedy led the Metro service to be halted on a busy section of the system, with trains now running again.

The emergency services were called to a section of the line between Felling and Heworth in Gateshead following a fatality this evening.

The Metros were cancelled between Gateshead Stadium and Pelaw as the fire service and police worked with officers from the system at the scene.

The service is now up and running again.

A Metro spokesman said: "A person has been involved in a collision with train on the line near Felling starion just after 7pm this evening.

"The person has died as as a result of this.

"Metro services were immediately halted between Gateshead Stadium and Pelaw and the emergency services were called on the scene.

"Local buses in the affected area were accepting Metro tickets.

"Metro services resumed at 9.29pm after the police and fire and rescue teams had completed their investigations and given the all clear for services to resume.

"A full investigation into this incident will be carried out."
