DJ had a close shave in aid of charity

FUND-RAZORS ... Trocaderos DJs Stephen Sullivan, left, and Craig Burt have shaved their heads to raise money for the Alzheimers Society.

A SOUTH Tyneside DJ had a close shave when he vowed to raise money for charity.

Craig Burt, who works at Trocaderos in Prince Georg Square, South Shields, has had his hair shaved and razored off in support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

The 22-year-old, of Whiteleas, South Shields, took on the image-altering challenge in honour of his grandmother, Margaret Sneller –known as Peggy – who has Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia.

Craig went under the razor in front of customers at the bar on January 30, when people made bids for the chance to take over the shaver.

When punters dared him to take his challenge one step further by shaving off his eyebrows for another £60, he agreed and increased the total.

Craig, who was nervous before the event, said: “It was an amazing night. I can’t thank everyone enough who took part and helped run the evening.

“I am eternally grateful to everyone – it means so much to me. I have always had a full head of hair and was incredibly nervous about losing it, but this was a very worthy cause and I’m overwhelmed by how much we have raised so far.”

Others joined the cause on the evening, with fellow DJ, Stephen Sullivan, 26, from South Shields, shaving his hair off to raise a further £100.

He said: “I always said I would never shave my head – not even for charity – but seeing Craig’s incredible bravery in having it all taken off spurred me on to help out his cause.

“I am so proud of Craig and all the others who allowed me to take off their hair.”

Staff members Jamie Harvey, Gash Aimes and Kevin Wilson all joined in on the evening and had their heads shaved as punters dug deep to raise more money.

Gavin Mann, manager of Trocaderos, said: “We are proud of all our staff, especially the fund-raisers and the most generous customers in the country who have helped Craig reach his target.”

Craig initially set out to raise £100 for the charity, which helps people with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. But by the end of the evening, he had raised £611.
