A team of firefighters have helped a dog to safety after it fell down a sinkhole close to a beauty spot.

Crews from South Shields Hebburn fire stations used specialist rope rescue equipment to rescue the dog, which had fallen 60ft into a sinkhole near Souter Lighthouse at Whitburn just after 2pm.

The dog - a five-month-old beagle - was unhurt, and returned to its owner, none the worse for its ordeal.

The rescue follows another out in the same spot on Wednesday, when a spaniel fell 60ft down a gap when it chased a bird.
