STUDENTS and staff at South Tyneside’s newest academy are today celebrating excellent A-level results.

There was an overall A-level pass rate of 98.3 per cent at St Joseph’s Catholic Academy, in Mill Lane, Hebburn.

Plus, there was an increase in the very top grades, with the percentage of A* and B grades increasing by five per cent, from 36 per cent in 2013 to 41 per cent in 2014.

Meanwhile, a total of 63 per cent of students counted A* to B grades among their results.

And almost 100 per cent of students gained a minimum of two A-levels or their equivalent.

Headteacher Frank O’Neill said: “We are very pleased with our results this year.

“At a time when A-level exams are becoming harder, we have increased our results at the top grades at both A-level and AS level for the second year running.”

The former St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive became an academy in July 2013.
