SCHOOL VISIT ... teacher Mary Crane plays guitar alongside Keelmans Way School pupils Noo, Jessie and Luke, watched by fellow teacher Julie Strong, and, back from left, Coun Richard Porthouse, Coun Ian Harkus and French visitors Elisabeth Puyo and Annie Bernier.

FOREIGN visitors learned lessons in special education on a visit to a new South Tyneside school.

Social care and education professionals from the borough’s French twin town of Noisy le Sec called in on pupils and staff at Keelman’s Way School in Campbell Park Road, Hebburn.

The four French visitors observed and learned from the good practice of the school that opened last September, providing state-of-art educational facilities for children with learning difficulties.

The visit also gave an opportunity to share skills, information and expertise.

The school provides learning and care to 98 youngsters, aged two to 19.

Headteacher Paula Selby said: “The recent visit of our French counterparts was very constructive.

“We were able to have conversations about the similar level of learning and support that we all deliver.

“They found it interesting to understand the kind of needs our young people deserve and to compare those with their own practice.

“It was a valuable exercise, where we both learned new things and the visitors will take their notes back home to France.

“We look forward to deliberating with the people from Noisy le Sec on other twinning opportunities.”

Coun Joan Atkinson, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for children, young people and families, said: “South Tyneside Council has made major investments in our schools and further education programmes, and it’s fantastic that our good practice is being recognised by European colleagues.”

Coun Richard Porthouse, a Hebburn North ward member, said: “For over half a century, Hebburn has nurtured a lasting relationship with the people of Noisy le Sec.

“It is fitting for the latest visit to include a tour of one of the borough’s new schools of excellence.

“Keelman’s Way is an inspiration to me and I will support the school in any way I can.”
