FUTURE stars of track and field from a Hebburn school went to the top of the UK sporting class at a prestigious competition.

A team from St Aloysius RC Junior School in Argyle Street, came out victorious in the Tyne and Wear County Sportshall Athletics Finals.

Held at Temple Park Leisure Centre, South Shields, the contest saw the school battling it out against some of the best young athletic talent in the region to win the competition for the fourth successive year.

Staged in association with UK Athletics and the UK School Games, the victory means the school is presently ranked first among primary schools in Britain for its athletics’ ability.

Pupils from the Hebburn school trained hard from last September for the recent finals, after beating other teams from South Tyneside to qualify.

In total, St Aloysius Juniors won six out of the 12 team field events, and six of the relays, beating their nearest rival, Gosforth Central Middle School, by 62 points.

The Hebburn school achieved 1,653 points on the Sportshall of Fame, based on the Aviva Sportshall Awards scoring system.

Adam Rogers, a teacher and sports coach at the school, said: “It was an unbelievable achievement for the school, myself and the children.

“I’m delighted for each and every child who represented our school –every one one of them gave their all to contribute to the overall team score.

“All of the children representing our school thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and will certainly remember being No1.

“To win the competition for the fourth year in succession in its four-year existence is a tremendous feat.

“The children’s dedication and determination is truly astounding, and once again our hard work together has certainly paid off.”

The school has thanked Andrea Fyall, South Tyneside sports development officer, and Dominic Soulsby, St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive Adidas Gold Young Sports Ambassador, for the support they provided.
