CELEBRATIONS ... Kay Douglas, back left, and Karen Pippet celebrate Riverside Childrens Centres good Ofsted report.

CHILDREN enjoy spending time at a “happy, safe and lively” South Tyneside nursery, education inspectors have concluded.

For that was the verdict of Ofsted officials after they visited the Riverside Children’s Centre in Garrick Street, Chichester, South Shields.

The children’s centre provides a wide range of services for youngsters and their families, while the nursery, which is also based at the centre, caters for 52 children up to the age of five.

Both services have been judged as ‘good’ after they were inspected last month.

The inspection report said: “The nursery provides a warm, nurturing and inclusive environment where children are happy and settled.

“Staff make sure that the play equipment covers all areas of learning and the children’s interests.

“This means children are motivated to explore, and remain engaged throughout their time at nursery.

“This is a happy, safe and lively place where learning is fun.”

The report also praises the enthusiasm and positive attitude of staff, and says the overall development of children is “very good.”

Inspectors said they were impressed by the children’s centre, which hosts toddler and mother support groups, and also offers childcare training for parents.

They said the centre supports families and gives “high priority” to child safety and protection.

The report said the centre now needs to encourage more mothers to breastfeed, and keep encouraging families to maintain healthy lifestyles.

In the nursery, inspectors said staff need to review how children’s progress records can be continued as they move to the next age group, and also to appoint a staff member responsible for behaviour management issues.

Karen Pippet, who has been manager at the nursery and children’s centre since 2000, said: “We’re happy with the report and it reflects the good working relationship between our staff, the children and their parents.

“I would like to thank everyone for their continued hard work.

“The inspectors highlighted the high quality of staff we have and how this reflects on the quality of care and learning.

“We are always looking to improve and the recommendations in the report are fair.

“Our primary target is to focus on these things, such as helping the children to be healthy.”

Miss Pippet said the nursery curriculum is designed to meet the needs of each child, and to reflect their interests.

The nursery was previously based at Wharfedale Drive, South Shields, before moving to the current site in 2006.
