KICK-OFF ... Mayor, Coun Ernest Gibson, and Coun Jim Foreman open the new 3G football pitches at Temple Park.

LIFE’s a pitch for young South Tyneside footballers after a new £400k field of dreams was officially opened.

A state-of-the-art 3G pitch has been laid at Temple Park Centre, in South Shields.

And to mark the occasion, pupils from three primary schools, Westoe Crown Primary, St Oswald’s RC Primary and Harton Primary, got to grips with the artificial grass surface in a round-robin tournament.

The event was attended by the Mayor of South Tyneside, Coun Ernest Gibson, who officially opened the new-look pitches which feature floodlights, fencing, paths and storage facilities.

The revamp of the pitches was made possible with a £426,098 grant from the Football Foundation, which invests in grassroots projects and is funded by the Football Association, Premier League and government. Work was carried out by contractors Greenfields.

Coun Gibson said: “It’s such a fantastic facility, and we are grateful to the Football Foundation and Greenfields and everyone who has made this possible.

“It’s great to see the young people enjoying themselves, and hopefully they’ll be many more days like this when we will see large numbers of young people utilising what is a fantastic facility.”

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “This wouldn’t have been possible without the grant from the Football Foundation, and I would like to thank them, Greenfields and all of the other partners who have helped bring our vision to life.”

Adrian Morris, from the Football Foundation, said: “I’ve been involved in the process from when it was first mentioned about the refurbishment right through to it being finished.

“It’s great to see the job from the initial inception to completion, and to see the young people playing on it, it’s just fantastic.”

The new 3G pitch at Temple Park centre is open to the public, and the council’s Sport and Leisure Team have also established various partnerships to ensure it will be utilised by sports clubs from across the borough.
