YOUNGSTERS were celebrating GCSE success at St Wilfrid’s RC College in South Shields – despite this year’s tougher marking system.

The school in Temple Park Road had an 81 per cent pass rate for five A* to Cs - an 18.4 per cent drop on last year’s 99.4 per cent.

There was also a drop in five top pass rates, including English and maths, from 84 per cent to 67 per cent.

Headteacher Brendan Tappin said: “We are thrilled that almost a third of our students achieved three A*to A grades, with 67 per cent achieving 5 A* to C including maths and English, when using the Department for Education’s new rigorous requirements for calculating GCSE performance.”
