Head of new £23m school is stepping down

THE headteacher of a new £23m state-of-the-art school in South Tyneside is stepping down, it was announced this week.

Dr Joe Campbell is retiring from St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive School in Mill Lane, Hebburn, after 20 years.

Pupils and staff moved into the new technology and applied learning college last year, after it was rebuilt as part of the Building Schools For The Future programme.

Dr Campbell will retire at the end of the summer term, and a new headteacher will take over in September.

St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive has consistently been one of the highest achieving schools in the borough in recent years.

The school was judged “outstanding” in its last two Ofsted inspections.

Terence Carney, chairman of governors, paid tribute to Dr Campbell.

He said: “Dr Campbell has been a loyal and influential servant to the school, and his post will take some filling.

“I have personally found him very helpful and very supportive in my role as chairman.

“He is the kind of professional who is in school for 7am, and I think his academic record speaks for itself.”

An advertisement for Dr Campbell’s post has appeared in the Times Educational Supplement, which states: “The governors of this highly successful and popular Catholic school are seeking to appoint a creative, dynamic and inspirational leader to succeed our headteacher, Dr Joe Campbell, who is retiring in July after 20 years of outstanding service.”

The closing date for applications is February 3.

Dr Campbell declined to comment on his forthcoming retirement.
