BRIGHT pupils are celebrating an 18 per cent increase in their GCSE grades – despite studying in the middle of a building site.

Staff and students at Hebburn Comprehensive School this year saw 90 per cent of its exam students gain five or more A* to C grades.

This is a big increase on last year’s figure of 72 per cent, and comes as the school undergoes an extensive £12m refurbishment as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.

Although the number of students gaining five or more A* to C grades, including core subjects maths and English, declined slightly from 59 per cent last year to 58 per cent this year, headteacher Niall Anderson remains “delighted” with the GCSE results.

He said: “The increase in the overall GCSE pass rate to 90 per cent represents a huge leap, and that is something to be celebrated.

“I think the improvement is partly down to the impact of a slightly different curriculum, but we’re extremely pleased with the figures.”

Mr Anderson acknowledged the GCSE pass rate, including maths and English, had fallen by one per cent, but believes that was down to periodic fluctuations in classroom abilities.

He added: “Our results are still way above the average, and we are also a school which operates in an area of quite significant deprivation.”

Mr Anderson does not believe the school revamp had any major impact on this year’s GCSE results, but admitted it was sparking “practical problems” for staff on a daily basis.

“The scheme started in April last year and is due to be completed in April next year, by which time the school will have undergone a major refurbishment,” Mr Anderson added.

Some pupils at the school, in Campbell Park Road, Hebburn, yesterday celebrated excellent results with hugs and kisses.

Zoe Christer, 16, who gained no less than 16 A grades, said: “I cannot believe how well I’ve done.

“The teachers have really helped me and I enjoyed being at the school. I’m now planning to take A-levels in maths, biology, chemistry and law at the sixth form at St Joseph’s Comprehensive.”

Joanie Hutchinson-Ross, also 16, celebrated 17 GCSE passes, including an impressive 10 A* grades.

Both she and proud mum, Michelle Ross, said they were “over the moon” with the amazing academic tally.

Talented Joanie is now heading to Harton Technology College, South Shields, for A-levels, but also has her sights set on an Oxbridge place, to study for an English degree.
