ENERGETIC South Tyneside school kids are hoping to slam-dunk a regional championship title tonight in front of 3,000 basketball fans.
Youngsters from Hadrian Primary School’s basketball team have already been crowned winners of South Tyneside’s ‘Hoops4Health’ tournament.
And tonight they will playing against squads from Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside and Sunderland during a ‘night of champions’.
The players will be on court during the half-time break of the Newcastle Eagles game against Guildford Heat at Northumbria University’s Sports Central.
The winning team will then head off to the national finals in Birmingham next month.
The children from the Baring Street school in Lawe Top, South Shields, won their place in the regional finals after beating Monkton Juniors in Newcastle last Friday.
After a tough 0-0 draw, it went to a tense penalty shoot-out, where Hadrian won 4-2.
Headteacher Scott Brown believes the Hoops4Health programme, run by Newcastle Eagles, is a great opportunity for children,
He said: “The Eagles do a brilliant job emphasising the importance of healthy living, and give children the opportunity to meet and talk to professional players.”
“The tournament final at Sports Central was an incredible experience.
“Having the opportunity to play basketball in front of 3,000 people is something that children will remember forever.
“The children and staff at Hadrian Primary School are delighted that our team were the eventual winners in a thrilling final, but would like to extend our congratulations to everyone that took part. ”
