MOVIE magic was top of the class at a glittering awards ceremony at Jarrow School.

Actor, stuntman and former professional basketball player Ian Whyte, who has appeared in a Harry Potter movie, plus Clash of the Titans, Game of Thrones and Alien Vs Predator, was the special guest at the ceremony, presenting pupils with certificates and awards.

The North Tyneside-based actor also gave a talk to pupils about aspiring to reach their goals. A school spokesman said: “As a resident of Tyneside, Ian has accomplished huge success and this is extremely inspirational to our pupils.

“The school was delighted that he was able to attend the awards ceremony and join them in their continuing march to becoming one of the best schools in the North East.”

Jarrow School, in Field Terrace, Jarrow, celebrated the success of last year’s school-leavers, who achieved record results.

The latest results were the highest the school has achieved, with 57 per cent of pupils gaining 5 A* to C GCSE grades, including English and maths.

A school spokesman added: “It is currently a time of celebration and excitement at Jarrow School and this is just one of a series of events to recognise the superb progress that the school continues to make.

“The school has recently been graded by Ofsted as having ‘outstanding’ behaviour and safety and ‘outstanding’ leadership and management, whilst all pupils make either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ progress, due to the majority of teaching being ‘good’ or ‘outstanding.’

“Past students received certificates and individual prizes for ‘outstanding’ work, effort and attainment in individual subject areas.”
