BUDDING young entrepreneurs had their business skills tested during a day of enterprising fun.

Pupils from East Boldon Infants School experienced the world of work after being asked to make money.

The youngsters, who worked in groups, only had a limited budget in which to create goods for sale out of recycled materials.

Headteacher Vivien Gasston said: “The pupils were tasked with building their own mini-business selling items made from recycled materials.

“They were each given a budget to buy and make their items – which were a plant pot and model elephants – so it brought in their maths skills as well as decision-making skills.

“We linked the day in with our current topic which is India – to try and show our pupils just how fortunate they are.”

Throughout the day, youngsters from Year One and reception classes, had to decide if they had enough cash to buy decorative materials, how they would market their goods for sale and how much they would sell them for.

Mrs Gasston added: “The children really enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun making their plant pots and elephants.

“They were really engaged in the session. We also noticed we have a few leaders amongst our pupils – you never know, in the future they could become budding entrepreneurs.”

The school is hoping the youngsters will be able to call on skills learned during enterprise day to help raise money in the future for a school in Bangladesh, which the primary school in Front Street, East Boldon, has links to.

The day was organised by Inspire Smart Education.
