THE curtain could be about to rise on a new development at South Tyneside’s main cinema site.

Ambitious plans for the extension of Cineworld in Boldon Colliery have been revealed.

Members of the council’s planning committee are to consider an application to extend the front of the existing cinema to create two new restaurants.

The outlets are to be located on each flank of the front elevation of the existing building.

Only one objection to the bid has been received from a resident in nearby Taylor Street, who has expressed concern at the potential for traffic congestion at peak times in and around the site.

Coun Sherie Murphy, who represents Boldon Colliery for Labour, has also sought assurances that the new businesses “should be strong in dealing with potential littering”.

Members of the planning committee will be recommended to give the go ahead to the extension work in Abingdon Way, on Boldon Leisure Park.

A report to the committee says: “The proposal from X-Leisure Limited also includes revisions to the car park, as the extensions would partly encroach into it, and these would enable the provision of an additional 21 spaces, so there would be 472 spaces overall.

“The proposal is acceptable in terms of its layout, scale and design, impact on the general character of the area, amenities of neighbours and highway safety.

“It therefore accords to the Local Development Framework policies to be taken into account, and there are no material considerations that would indicate an assessment to the contrary.”

Because the development lies in a coal mining area, the Coal Authority is to be contacted in case the site contains unrecorded mining-related hazards.

The planning committee is to meet at South Shields Town Hall on Monday, October 1, from 10am. The public can attend.
