“During this time he has inspired thousands of young people to care for our beautiful world.
“He runs programmes with school groups, weekend clubs and is one of the most experienced Forest School leaders in the North East.”
The father-of-one runs adult training courses in conservation skills and looks after the site in winter.
He said: “Natural history is something that has always interested me, and I love my job.
“I was surprised to be nominated for this award. but very flattered.
“I’m sure there are hundreds of teachers in the borough who have done more for kids.”
