Expert tells worker: ‘You’re fired - then hired!’

YOU'RE HIRED ... Olivia Liddle was fired by jobs expert Joanne Howe, inset, who then found her another job.

YOU'RE HIRED ... Olivia Liddle was fired by jobs expert Joanne Howe, inset, who then found her another job.

A SOUTH Tyneside jobs expert was hired to tell a worker she was surplus to requirements – but ended up finding her a new post instead.

Joanne Howe, of South Shields-based Howe Consultancy, is employed by companies to tell unfortunate employees they face the axe.

Due to the economic climate, it is sadly becoming an all-too-common task.

But recently there was a happy twist to her work, when she was asked by one company to abide by the correct policies and procedures to inform Olivia Liddle that she was no longer required as an administration assistant.

A short time earlier, she had been in a meeting with another client, PRS Inclusion Services, based at Cookson House in South Shields.

It provides training and other services for disabled people.

And managing director Pamela Seers had informed her there was a vacancy coming up – for a new administration assistant.

Mrs Howe told Olivia of the vacancy, so Miss Liddle applied – and got the job!

“I heard about the job opportunity and thought that Olivia Liddle had the ideal skill set to meet the demands of the new opportunity,” Mrs Howe said.

“After I told her the unfortunate news, I was able to give her some good news too.

“Olivia was obviously upset, but relieved that I had thought of her. She had to go through the same recruitment procedures as everybody else who applied for the job, and she was shortlisted as a candidate and offered the position.

“It was great for me to be able to do this, as it’s not very often I get to deliver good news and help employees out.

“I am always considering what’s best for my clients, and knowing Olivia’s strengths, it made complete sense to recommend her.”

Miss Liddle said: “Although it was a sad time, as I was being made redundant, Joanne went the extra mile and pushed for me to apply for the job I now have, and I’m glad she did.

“She has helped me since I started my new job too, and as this position is similar to my last one, it’s been an ideal transition”.

Mrs Seers: “We are so pleased with the work Olivia has done so far.

“She is excelling in everything and I cannot wait to see what she brings to the future development of PRS. It’s great that Joanne was pro-active and trying to help out all of her clients involved.”

Howe Consultancy Ltd, based in South Shields, has been in operation for two years, offering a range of HR services to businesses across the North East, including HR consultancy, strategic and operational HR management, safeguarding, training, absence and recruitment.
