DEFIANT fans have daubed graffiti on the wall of Newcastle United’s St James’s Park stadium after owner Mike Ashley removed its famous name.
The St James’s Park lettering was taken down from an exterior wall yesterday as the latest stage of the name-change to the Sports Direct Arena.
The move sparked anger among many fans, and the words “St James” were written in white paint at the ground last night.
Club staff used high pressure cleaning equipment to remove the graffiti this morning.
The club says the change is a temporary measure to “showcase” the sponsorship opportunity to “interested parties”.
Managing director Derek Llambias has said stadium rebranding could generate up to £10m a year for the club.
Many Newcastle fans have said they will continue to call the ground St James’s Park - and the Gazette will still call the ground by its traditional name.
