NOMINATED ... librarian Tom Relph has been put forward for the Achieving Excellence award.

A SOUTH Tyneside librarian who launched a club for borough film buffs has been nominated for an award.

Tom Relph has been put forward for the Achieving Excellence accolade in this year’s Pride of South Tyneside.

The community librarian has worked for South Tyneside Library Services for the last 14 years.

Five years ago, the 43-year-old, of Gateshead, started a film club for adults with learning disabilities at the Central Library in Prince Georg Square, South Shields.

He was nominated for the award by Ian Curry, of South Tyneside Council’s day opportunities service, who said: “The People’s Cinema at the library is run by Tom, and benefits individuals, families, council and community day opportunities services, respite services, a carers support group for kids with ADHD, and even schools and colleges from here and beyond.

“Having known Tom five years, I have found him to be very community-spirited.”

Mr Relph said: “The film club has been going for five years now and we have about 50 or 60 people coming each week.

“We’ve watched about 250 films since it started, and the people have chosen every one.

“The club is all about giving the group the chance to do something they have control of, and get together with friends every week.

“It’s not really about what I’m doing, it’s the members’ group really.”
