A SOUTH Shields-born footballer who went on to become Brian Clough’s right-hand man has died aged 73.
Ron Fenton spent 16 years on the coaching staff at Nottingham Forest, including six as assistant to the charismatic Cloughie.
As a player, he was a talented inside-forward who made almost 200 apperances for his various clubs.
He began his career at Burnley before moving on to West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City and Brentford.
After hanging up his boots, he went on to join the coaching staff at Notts County and was appointed Magpies’ manager in 1975.
Two years later, he crossed the Trent to join the staff at city rivals Forest.
