Kind-hearted friends are set to make a giant leap of faith as they show their support for a cancer-suffering toddler.

Poppy Gidney, two, from Boldon Colliery, was diagnosed with cancer of the liver – hepatoblastoma – in May, with the disease having spread to her lungs.

She is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, with parents Paul Gidney and Kayla Cox by her side.

To help them get through such a difficult and distressing time, family friends are joining forces in a bid to raise funds.

Harvey Gill, 32, from South Hetton, will be one of four to take part in a skydive to raise money for the family next month.

Kevan and Luke Jackson, from Thorney Close, and Brandon Price, from Jarrow, will also make the leap from 10,000ft on July 6 at Skydive Academy, in Shotton Colliery.

The friends are hoping to raise in excess of £2,000 for Poppy’s family, enabling them to buy any necessary equipment and helping with other costs during this tough time.

Harvey said: “We just want to do something nice for the young girl and her family. They’re going through a terrible time.

“Going through something like that must be so difficult.

“Financially it must be very tough as well, because you’ve still got bills to pay and can’t work as much.

“We just want to try and make Poppy’s and their lives a little bit easier by raising some money.”

Poppy and her family are now living in South Shields.

On the upcoming skydive, Harvey added: “I’ve never taken part in a skydive before, but it’s just something we wanted to do to help.

“I can’t imagine what it must be like to be in that situation.

“We’re a bit nervous about it, but we know it’s so worthwhile because it’s for such a good cause.

“We want people to know that this is happening and that the family needs our help.”
