RUNNERS in South Tyneside will get the chance to take part in one of the country’s biggest fundraising events when the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile returns to the borough next month.

South Shields is to host its third running of the event on Sunday, March 25, on The Leas at South Shields.

Last year, hundreds of runners took part in the event, and organisers hope this year will be even better.

The event will start near Gypsies Green Stadium, and the three available courses will take in the sights along the coastline.

Athletes can choose to complete over one, three or six miles.

Coun Tracey Dixon, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for leisure and community safety, said: “The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in South Tyneside is a chance for everyone to shine.

“From tiny tots with their mums and dads, to serious runners up against the clock, there’s something for everyone on the big day.

“This is the third Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in South Tyneside, and it’s set to be a great event. I’d urge everyone to come along and pull their socks up for Sport Relief.”

Sport relief helps a range of charities in the UK and some of the world’s poorest countries.

The Sport Relief Weekend kicks off on Friday, March 23.

More than one million people took part in last year’s Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile at venues all over the country.
