Bede Wing nurse suspended over mistreatment allegations
INVESTIGATION ... the Bede Wing mental health unit in South Shields.
A MENTAL health nurse has been suspended over allegations that a patient was mistreated.
Health bosses were called to the Bede Wing mental health unit in South Shields, after staff were accused of “frogmarching” a woman into a shower against her will.
A probe was launched on Monday after the patient, believed to be in her 50s, reported her alleged ordeal to staff.
One nurse has since been suspended, pending an investigation by the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTWNHSFT), which runs the unit.
Independent watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) was told of the allegation and has passed the complaint to South Tyneside’s Safeguarding Adults Partnership, made up of health and social care officials.
A spokesman for the NTWNHSFT said: “Following a complaint, we are currently carrying out an investigation into the concerns which have been raised on the Bede unit.
“Our priority is always to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of our patients, and they deserve nothing less than the highest standards, and our trust values are very clear in this respect.
“We have clear and robust procedures in place for reporting, investigating and managing complaints and incidents.
“The analysis and learning from complaints and incidents allows the trust to establish successful solutions for the people affected, and change systems to prevent incidents and complaints from recurring.”
A spokesman for the CQC said: “CQC has been made aware of an alleged incident on the Bede Wing.
“On receipt of the complaint, we immediately referred it to the local safeguarding organisation. We await the outcome of their deliberations.”
The Bede Wing is based within the grounds of South Tyneside District Hospital in Harton Lane, and provides acute assessment and treatment services for people with mental health needs.
