Clubbing together to boost charity

THINKING of loved ones has helped boost the kitty of a South Tyneside-based cancer charity.

Staff and customers of the Iona Club collected £200 over the festive season for Cancer Connections.

The money was raised by people donating £1 to place a card on a memory tree with a message for a loved one who they wouldn’t get to see at Christmas.

Lynda Sewell, concert chairwoman at the Iona Club in Station Road, Hebburn, said: “The staff and customers just decided they wanted to do something to raise money for a local charity, and they thought Christmas was the time to remember people who they wouldn’t get to see then, which is where the memory tree idea came from.

“Cancer Connections was chosen as there are people in the club who have connections with the charity.

“The memory tree proved quite popular and is something we will definitely be doing again this year. The response was brilliant.”

Cancer Connections, based in Harton Lane, South Shields, provides help and support to people and their families diagnosed with cancer.

“The charity also provides benefits advice and bereavement support.

Co-founder Deborah Roberts said: “We are absolutely delighted by the support shown by the Iona Club, and what a lovely way to remember loved ones at Christmas, through a memory tree.

“The money raised will go towards helping us to continue the services that are so vital to those who access our services.”
