HUNDREDS of people are getting on the road to fitness after signing up with a new £750,000 gym developed at a South Tyneside social club.
The owners of Fit4Less say that about 600 people have already taken up membership, just days since the gym opened for business.
Based at the Jarrow Buffs club in Ellison Street, the fitness centre contains state-of-the-art equipment, and is aimed at people of all ages and fitness levels.
Charles Buchanan, a director of owner Easy Fitness, said: “The response from local people has been absolutely fantastic.
“We only opened for business this week, but we have already had 600 people joining the gym.
“And what has been really heartening is to see so many older people signing on.
“With obesity issues so much in the news, the gym will really help to boost fitness in the South Tyneside area.”
Work on converting the club’s first floor into a cutting-edge fitness suite has taken four months.
Mr Buchanan added: “People’s jaws are almost hitting the floor when they come in and see the kind of fitness equipment that we have on offer.
“The standard of Fit4Less is equivalent to what you would find in a gym in the centre of London, where you could expect to pay a fortune for membership.
“Instead of which, people in Jarrow can pay just £17 a month to use the gym.”
Easy Fitness now leases the building’s ground floor to Jarrow Buffs club, which was forced into liquidation because of dwindling membership, cheap supermarket booze, the 2007 smoking ban and the general decline of the North East’s clubland.
